RFE/RL Provides Constant Updates From Port City of Poti

Russian forces prepare their position to secure a bridge in the western port city of Poti, August 20, 2008

August 26, 2008

(Tbilisi/Prague) Despite a cease-fire agreement, Russian troops maintain their grip on the key Georgian Black Sea port of Poti. The town is on edge, with attacks against locals, looting by Russian troops, and the constant fear of violence. RFE/RL's Georgian Service correspondent Tea Absaridze is in Poti and will provide updates from the town on a special RFE/RL blog:

"Behind the Poti Lines"

RFE/RL's Tbilisi bureau has correspondents throughout the country reporting from the front lines. Visit RFE/RL's Georgia Crisis Page, a comprehensive site with the latest news, analysis, photos and video of the conflict.

Last week, RFE/RL special correspondent Goga Aptsiauri was one of only a handful of journalists reporting from the besieged town of Gori, in central Georgia. He provided continuous coverage of the drawn-out withdrawal Russian military forces on a special RFE/RL Blog From Gori
.
"With the Russian and Georgian media providing, at times, wildly different accounts of what is actually happening on the ground, our listeners depend on us for accurate, objective information," said David Kakabadze, RFE/RL's Georgian Service director. "Our journalists are sorting through the ethnic and nationalist passions stirred up by this conflict in order to let people on both sides of the conflict know what is really taking place in their cities."

CSPAN recently featured correspondents of RFE/RL's Georgian service in a live hookup between Washington, Tbilisi and Prague to discuss the conflict between Russia and Georgia (watch the briefing on C-SPAN).
